Surah Al-Mulk (Arabic: الملك), also known as "The Sovereignty" or "The Dominion," is the 67th chapter of the Quran, consisting of 30 verses. It is a Makki surah, revealed in Mecca before the migration to Madinah.
Significance:
Surah Al-Mulk emphasizes the sovereignty and dominion of Allah over all creation. It invites reflection on the signs of Allah's power and wisdom in the heavens and the earth, urging humans to ponder upon the purpose of their existence and the consequences of their actions.
Surah Al-Mulk encourages believers to reflect on the signs of Allah's creation, urging them to ponder upon the purpose of life and the consequences of their actions. It emphasizes the transient nature of worldly life and the certainty of the Hereafter. Throughout the surah, Allah's attributes of mercy, forgiveness, and omnipotence are highlighted, reassuring believers of His benevolence and compassion.
Merits of Recitation:
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is a Surah in the Qur’an consisting of thirty verses. It interceded for a man until he was forgiven. It is: "Blessed is He in Whose hand is the dominion." [Surah al-Mulk].
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informs us in this Hadīth that the Qur’an has a 30-verse Surah that interceded for a man until Allah, the Almighty, forgave him. As he used to recite this Surah regularly during his lifetime, it interceded for him after his death, until Allah ﷺ, averted His punishment from him. The Prophet ﷺ did not name the Surah at the beginning of the Hadīth, but he did so at its end; a powerful indication of its sublimity and high rank and a greater motive for reciting it persistently.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ conveyed profound lessons for believers regarding the power of consistent recitation of specific Quranic chapters and their profound intercession on the Day of Judgment. Among these, he specifically encouraged the recitation of Surah Al-Mulk before sleeping, emphasizing its dual benefits: protection from the punishment of the grave and intercession for its reciter on the Day of Judgment, advocating for forgiveness and mercy.
