The time of the revelation of the Surah
Surah An-Nasr is a Madinan surah by consensus. There are differing opinions regarding its time of revelation. The first opinion is that it was the last surah revealed from the Quran, coming after Surah At-Tawbah. Muhammad Al-Tahir ibn Ashur said, "According to Ibn Abbas, it was the last surah revealed from the Quran, making it the 114th surah. It was revealed after Surah Bara'ah, and no other surah was revealed after it." It is said to have been revealed in the year of the Prophet's death. According to Ibn Abbas in Musnad Ahmad, he said: "When it was revealed, 'When comes the Help of Allah, and the Victory,' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'It has been informed to me about my death,' indicating that it was revealed in that year." Al-Bazzar, Al-Bayhaqi, Ibn Abi Shaybah, and Abdul bin Humayd narrated from Ibn Umar that it was revealed in the middle of the days of Tashriq in the year of Farewell Pilgrimage.
Lessons from Surah Nasr:
Gratitude and Praise: Surah Nasr teaches us the importance of gratitude and praise in moments of victory. Rather than becoming arrogant or proud, we should acknowledge that our success is a result of Allah’s help and grace. Just as the Prophet Muhammad (S) celebrated and praised Allah after the conquest of Mecca, we should express our gratitude for every blessing we receive.
Seeking Forgiveness: The Surah instructs us to seek Allah’s forgiveness. This act of seeking forgiveness is not due to the Prophet’s sins, as he was sinless. Instead, it serves as a model for the entire community. Seeking forgiveness reminds us of our dependence on Allah and our need for His mercy. It also encourages us to forgive others and show mercy, as the Prophet did to his defeated enemies after the conquest.
Humility: Victory should not lead to arrogance. Surah Nasr reminds us to remain humble and to recognize that our achievements are ultimately the result of Allah’s will. This humility allows us to maintain a balanced perspective and avoid the pitfalls of pride and self-conceit.
Divine Guidance: The Surah underscores the role of divine guidance in the spread of Islam. Allah’s help and victory open the path for people to enter His religion. This highlights the importance of faith and trust in Allah’s plan, even when faced with challenges.
