Surah Al Falaq: The Daybreak

Surah Al Falaq: The Daybreak

Surah Al-Falaq (Arabic: الفلق) which translates to "The Daybreak" or "The Dawn" is the 113th chapter of the Quran, consisting of 5 verses. The surah is classified as a Meccan surah, meaning it was revealed in the early period of Prophet Muhammad's  mission, while he was still in Mecca.

Surah Al-Falaq and Surah Al-Nas are collectively known as the "Mu'awwidhatayn" in Arabic, which translates to "the two protective surahs" or "the two chapters of seeking refuge." These two Surahs are often recited together for seeking protection from various forms of harm, evil influences, and negative energies.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged the regular recitation of Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, especially during the morning and evening. He taught that reciting these chapters serves as a means of seeking Allah's protection and blessings, thereby fortifying one's faith and spiritual well-being.

The Revelation:

Surah Al-Falaq, like other chapters of the Quran, was revealed in response to specific events and circumstances during the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Its revelation occurred at a time when the Prophet ﷺ and the early Muslim community faced various challenges, including external threats, opposition from adversaries, and the presence of harmful practices prevalent in pre-Islamic Arabia.

Surah Al-Falaq and Surah Al Nas were revealed in response to an incident where some enemies of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ engaged in black magic or sorcery to harm him. The Prophet ﷺ was affected by the effects of this magic, the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge in Allah ﷻ, and Jibril (Archangel Gabriel, peace be upon him) descended upon the Prophet ﷺ with the verses of the surahs to undo the effects of the sorcery.

It's Significance:

1. Divine Protection: The Surah begins with the invocation, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak." It acknowledges the sovereignty and protection of Allah ﷻ, the Creator of all times and spaces. By seeking refuge in Him, believers recognize His power over all matters and seek His safeguarding from evils, both visible and unseen.

2. Protection from Evil Spirits and Envy: The subsequent verses address specific threats to human well-being, such as witchcraft, envy, and the malevolent forces that operate in the darkness of night. "From the evil of the beings which He created," highlights the belief in the existence of supernatural entities and the need for Allah's ﷻ protection from their harm.

3. Seeking Guidance: Surah Al-Falaq serves as a reminder of the constant struggle between good and evil, light and darkness, guidance and misguidance. By reciting it, believers express their trust in Allah's ﷻ guidance and seek clarity in navigating life's challenges.
