In the teachings of Islam, certain verses of the Quran hold special significance and merit. Among these are the last two verses of Surat al-Baqarah, which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized as particularly beneficial when recited before sleeping. Delving into the Hadith, we find various interpretations regarding the blessings and protections conferred upon those who recite these verses.
The Hadith:
Abu Mas‘ūd al-Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "If one recites the last two verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah at night, it will suffice for him".
Scholars have interpreted this Hadith in multiple ways throughout history, each shedding light on the profound benefits of this simple act of worship.
Interpretations:
1. Protection Against Evil: One interpretation emphasizes that reciting these verses safeguards the individual against evil and undesirable situations throughout the night.
2. Substitute for Night Prayer (Qiyam Al Layl): Another viewpoint suggests that reciting these verses is a substitute for voluntary night prayers or other forms of worship, illustrating the comprehensive nature of their blessings.
3. Sufficiency for Night Prayer: A third opinion posits that these verses alone are sufficient for performing the night prayer, emphasizing their potency and efficacy in spiritual practice.
Significance:
The last verses of Surat al-Baqarah hold immense significance in Islamic tradition, offering believers a means of spiritual protection and fulfillment. By incorporating the recitation of these verses into one's nightly routine, individuals can seek refuge in Allah ﷻ from the influences of darkness and negativity.
On the authority of Abu Dharr (may God be pleased with him), Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, said: “Indeed, Allah ﷻ concluded Surah Al-Baqarah with two verses that He gave me from His treasure that is under His Throne. Learn them and teach them to your women and your children, for they are a prayer, a Qur’an, and a supplication.”
Imam Muslim narrated from the Sahih Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, on the authority of Ibn Abbas (may God be pleased with them both) that he said: “While Jibril (Archangel Gabriel, peace be upon him) was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ, he heard something from above him, so he raised his head and said: "This is a door from heaven that has never been opened before today”. An angel descended from it, and so he said: “This is an angel who descended to earth who has never descended before today”. So he greeted him and said: “Rejoice in the two lights you have been given that no prophet before you was given: Fatihat al-Kitab (Surat Al Fatiha), and the endings of Surat Al-Baqarah, You will never recite a letter from them for which you will not be given (a reward)”.
These two verses at the end of Surah Al-Baqarah have great merit because they convey relief and ease for the Muslim nation, as that all faith is combined in them, and that Allah ﷻ has lifted hardship from this nation thanks to His Messenger ﷺ, as they included supplication in several places, and are concluded with a request for pardon, forgiveness, and mercy.
When the words of Allah ﷻ were revealed: “To Allah ˹alone˺ belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Whether you reveal what is in your hearts or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it. He forgives whoever He wills, and punishes whoever He wills”. Fear fell into the hearts of the believers, wary of Allah ﷻ rebuking them for what they conceal within themselves. The Prophet ﷺ guided them to acceptance and obedience, so God ﷻ revealed the endings of Surat Al-Baqarah, reassuring them that He is the Most Merciful.
